Solar Project, Humana People to People India, Rajasthan, India

Going back to memories of my first few years in India, guided by the great people at @humanaindia in Rajasthan. These woman were taking part in a solar energy project, taking a torch home for the evening and bringing it back to charge the next morning.

Young Student + Staircase, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2020

We visited her school for the first time in 2020, a month before the pandemic swept the world into a sphere of chaos. Innocent times they were, as we walked around the headmaster's house which also doubled as her school. These girls were receiving religious training and the headmaster wanted to do much more than that. We have included his school in our drive to do just that, and support this good man in his endeavor to improve the level of education for her and her friends.

Cuban in Front of His House, Manzanillo, Cuba, 2016

I do miss the days when we used to drive into the countryside. We’d never know who we were going to run into, and the sessions were both instant and spontaneous. For this man's portrait we drove deep into the countryside near Manzanillo and ran across a small group of houses. Both young and older people were sitting around chatting when we arrived. They greeted us warmly and we had a conversation about the area, about their neighborhood. Once it came time for the photography they agreed and we set up for their portraits. The contrast between light and shadow deep in the woods was fascinating, albeit a bit difficult to print in the darkroom. I am sincerely blessed to have been introduced to the world through photography and hope to return to this area later this year.

Mentally + Physically Challenged, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

Over 16 years ago it was my privilege to visit this region and photography two homes for mentally and physically challenged individuals.  I was deeply moved by the dedication of the staff and the resilience of the occupants. The young girl in the background of this image was a force of nature herself, as she went back and forth between friends in order to help them with their portraits. She was the first person I met with Down's Syndrome thru my photography and will never be forgotten.

Man + House, Campo, Cuba

I do miss the days when we used to drive into the countryside. We’d never know who we were going to run into, and the sessions were both instant and spontaneous. Great times with genuine people!

Young Girl + Family Kitchen, Humana People to People, Rajasthan, India

In this village my collaboration with @humanaindia began in 2006, and the photography continues to the present. For this portrait we walked around the village with the teacher and visited the homes of the students. These experiences have enriched my life more than words can express. The girls just loved to role pay, and this young girl stood for her portrait in the family's open kitchen as the light came through the doorway.

Patricia + Railroad Tracks, Guanabacoa, Cuba, 2016

What would photography on the island be without Profe Gysleda and her students?

Let's just say that my interactions with her students are nothing short of miraculous. Here we are, welcomed into the most prestigious school for models in Havana, and allowed to interact equally with her students. These relationships over the years have turned into true friendships, and the collaborations are like times with friends.

Patricia is all the above and more, as this session in the countryside exemplifies. She brings a great attitude with her, as well as a great selection of clothing. Some say that this is anything but real photography, that photography in Cuba should be about photographing life as it presents itself in the streets. I say why not photograph the people as they would like to present themselves, as models and dancers and actors?

Well here is Patricia as a model, something that she has aspired to be in her young life. A incredible one truly in my humble opinion.

Young Girl + House, Crimea, Cuba, 2015

Driving into the Cuban countryside is a privilege, both because few can do so and also because of the people we meet. We arrived at this spot by happenstance, as we turned left off of the main road to venture. We met a man at a fruit stand and purchased a few items, all the while having a conversation and making his portrait. He told us of his village and invited us to visit. We decided to go and, long story short, ended up photographing this young girl's neighborhood. I'm grateful for her time, and the warmth that her family showed us during our times there. It's been many years since 2015 and I look forward to the possibility of visiting them once again in 2023.

Young Boy + Rice Field, Manzanillo, Cuba, 2017

I remember this image like it was yesterday. We had driven out to the eastern part of the island and were concentrating on a family living in the city for the photography. We also were able to drive to the countryside and meet some wonderful people. This young boy actually lived in the city but liked to visit his grandparents in the countryside. Alejandro was able to pull up within 100 meters or so of the house, but was limited due to the muddy path.

So I decided to get out and walk the rest of the way to speak with the family. They were very kind and welcomed me onto their property. Their home was a traditional one, constructed of wood. Their grandson showed interest in the camera and so we decided to play around, as he grabbed this tool and headed into the rice field. It was a great experience and one for which I am forever grateful. This is what the island means to me, incredible people and honest interactions.

Young Boy in School Uniform, Near Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

Fourteen years ago I was privileged to have access to a beautiful community in western Kenya, thanks to a foundation named MACODEF. We went from village to village, from school to school, in search of incredible people and stories. This school was on the outskirts of Kisumu, and we walked just to the side to make portraits of the entire student body. Some children had shoes and some lacked, while almost all of the children were wearing the only uniform that they possessed. The foundation is doing remarkable work given the conditions, and I applaud their efforts sincerely.

Ballerina + Freeway Exit, Bauta, Cuba, 2015

I sincerely miss the days when we'd get in Alejandro's car and pick up the family well before sunrise, arriving at this spot a bit before sunrise. The dedication of the families impresses me to this day. Their admiration for the work and their affection for their children are something to behold truly. This young girl lives in a small town near the capital but is now attending the national school of ballet in the city. Even back then her talent was clearly visible.

Trabajdores, Campo, Cuba, 2017

¡hermosos recuerdos del año 2017!

¡gracias a los trabajadores fuertes en el campo!

PS Negative exposed with a Hasselblad 503CW/100mm combination, the print toned in Selenium for permanence.

Lily + Countryside, Guanabacoa, Cuba, 2018

Thanks to Profe Gysleda and her school ModaEgos, images of aspiring models in the countryside were made possible. This neighborhood is one in which my friend Alejandro has both family and friends. As a result we were able to walk around and find spaces for our sessions. This one spot is one of my favorites and has the most beautiful blue chair, as seen in the background. This young woman, Lily, did exceptionally well in light of her very sensitive eyes. All are appreciated and my hope is that these prints are a testament to their collective vision.

Best Friends + Field, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India

I do miss these young girls and their friends, and have the highest respect for their courage in the midst of indifference and intolerance. Their village is the one in which I sleep during my stay in Uttar Pradesh, thanks to @chmunshadali and his beautiful family.

Their village is their world, and more exactly their home is their world. Unless they are attending school, they are almost always within the confines of their homes.

They’re fully aware of the hardships facing them and yet they persevere and endure through it all. In this classroom they could be themselves and act out their creative thoughts. It’s been an honor to be at their side all of these years.

9 Frames of a Boy, Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2010

So glad I took color positive film with me to Ethiopia back in 2010, and to have had the privilege of photographing the various tribes of the Lower Omo Valley. While the trip was a most difficult one, the images have brought me a sense of peace from the experience. My hope is to return one day and to do more than just visit, photograph and disappear.

Young Girl + Dress, Miramar, Nicaragua, 2019

My visit to Nicaragua came as my 50th year approached, the same age my father had when we left in the aftermath of the 1973 earthquake. The feeling of walking the same streets as my parents cannot be described. The embrace by the rural communities as we travelled took me by surprise and made me realize that I was home after so long.

Such was this morning session near Miramar. The people of this neighborhood embraced us immediately, such as this young and her family. Their lives are extremely hard, as they endure an existence without running water, access to healthcare, proper electricity, sanitation... while living in homes with dirt floors and open windows. These were the people that I wanted to meet, these are the lives that I needed to document.

Woman + Field, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

More than a decade and a half ago I was able to visit eastern Kenya in collaboration with an NGO named MACODEF. They were working in this region with the Maragoli Community and were doing so on many levels. It was an honor to witness the various schools with which they were collaborating, two centers for mentally and physically challenged children as well as dealing with the social complications stemming from the HIV/AIDS epidemic. While most of the photography was in monochrome, some of it thankfully included color.

2 Girls +9 Frames, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2020

I can’t imagine taking only monochrome film with me to India and am grateful to have taken the chance years ago… the colors of the shawls and faces in Uttar Pradesh!

Teacher and Student, Sewing Center, Virat Nagar, Rajasthan, India, 2020

2020 was like another world, and I hope that this community is safe during these difficult days. Soon we hope that the centers can reopen and that they can make more beautiful clothing for their families and learn a valuable trade at the same time. In this picture stand the teacher and her student, on the rooftop which once did not exist when we first began our photography in 2006. Amazing how photography has documented the changes my eyes have witnessed over the years.
