Memories of Utah, Monument Valley, 2016

The grandeur of Monument Valley sticks with me to this day. In 2016 I was blessed to have visited this space thanks to a work assignment in Salt Lake City. On the weekends it was time to visit the national parks, with Monument Valley being high on my list. I just couldn't believe that I was that close to a most iconic space. Having this image on film and printing it in the darkroom was a treat.

Young Girl + Family Kitchen, Humana People to People, Rajasthan, India

In this village my collaboration with @humanaindia began in 2006, and the photography continues to the present. For this portrait we walked around the village with the teacher and visited the homes of the students. These experiences have enriched my life more than words can express. The girls just loved to role pay, and this young girl stood for her portrait in the family's open kitchen as the light came through the doorway.

What would photography on the island be without Profe Gysleda and her students?

Let's just say that my interactions with her students are nothing short of miraculous. Here we are, welcomed into the most prestigious school for models in Havana, and allowed to interact equally with her students. These relationships over the years have turned into true friendships, and the collaborations are like times with friends.

Patricia is all the above and more, as this session in the countryside exemplifies. She brings a great attitude with her, as well as a great selection of clothing. Some say that this is anything but real photography, that photography in Cuba should be about photographing life as it presents itself in the streets. I say why not photograph the people as they would like to present themselves, as models and dancers and actors?

Well here is Patricia as a model, something that she has aspired to be in her young life. A incredible one truly in my humble opinion.

Driving into the Cuban countryside is a privilege, both because few can do so and also because of the people we meet. We arrived at this spot by happenstance, as we turned left off of the main road to venture. We met a man at a fruit stand and purchased a few items, all the while having a conversation and making his portrait. He told us of his village and invited us to visit. We decided to go and, long story short, ended up photographing this young girl's neighborhood. I'm grateful for her time, and the warmth that her family showed us during our times there. It's been many years since 2015 and I look forward to the possibility of visiting them once again in 2023.

I can’t imagine taking only monochrome film with me to India and am grateful to have taken the chance years ago… the colors of the shawls and faces in Uttar Pradesh!

Ballerina + Freeway Exit, Bauta, Cuba, 2015

I sincerely miss the days when we'd get in Alejandro's car and pick up the family well before sunrise, arriving at this spot a bit before sunrise. The dedication of the families impresses me to this day. Their admiration for the work and their affection for their children are something to behold truly. This young girl lives in a small town near the capital but is now attending the national school of ballet in the city. Even back then her talent was clearly visible.

Zion National Park, Utah, 2016

It’s time to get back to the portraits, just had a lot of fun with the landscapes. While working my first corporate gig a few years ago, I had the opportunity to travel the States and bring my camera along. This landscape is from Zion National Park in magnificent Utah.

Lily + Countryside, Guanabacoa, Cuba, 2018

Thanks to Profe Gysleda and her school ModaEgos, images of aspiring models in the countryside were made possible. This neighborhood is one in which my friend Alejandro has both family and friends. As a result we were able to walk around and find spaces for our sessions. This one spot is one of my favorites and has the most beautiful blue chair, as seen in the background. This young woman, Lily, did exceptionally well in light of her very sensitive eyes. All are appreciated and my hope is that these prints are a testament to their collective vision.

9 Frames of a Boy, Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 2010

So glad I took color positive film with me to Ethiopia back in 2010, and to have had the privilege of photographing the various tribes of the Lower Omo Valley. While the trip was a most difficult one, the images have brought me a sense of peace from the experience. My hope is to return one day and to do more than just visit, photograph and disappear.

Anais as a Boy, Centro Habana, Cuba 2018

Nothing like looking through a large loupe at my life's memories, including this special image of Anais during my last trip to the island. We have been collaborating since she was barely 8 years old back in 2008, when we met in front of her dance school. Now she wanted to make a series as a boy, and we borrowed some clothes from a dear friend for this occasion. This space was next to my apartment in Centro Habana. So we picked her up early in the morning and headed to this apartment building. She was just perfect, as always.

Silver Gelatin Print in the Darkroom, Imperial Sand Dunes, California, 2019

Yet another print from my time at Imperial Sand Dunes a few years ago. Walking around these dunes is like finding a visual treat over every sand dune, and it's hard to keep from putting the tripod down for another image. The contrast between light and shadow is breathtaking.

Note: this frame was made with a Hasselblad V System and a 100mm C lens.

Young Girls, The Gambia, 2006

Pierre Verger’s portraits in this region were on my mind as we walked onto the beach of this fishing village. It was hard enough to walk into the crowd as the only non-African, but the crowd was more than friendly. After setting up the camera many were curious enough to allow their portraits.

Sand Dunes + Clouds, Imperial Sand Dunes, California, 2019

Another print from the Imperial Sand Dunes, this time at the end of the day as I was walking back to the main road. The landscape is such a marvelous place, with scenes around each corner. Just when you think you're done, you end up putting the tripod down and getting ready for another exposure.

Audra + Brush, El Mirage Dry Lake Bed, California

In the darkroom with the negatives from California, and with this frame of Audra at El Mirage. One of my favorite people in one of my favorite places on earth, such is the truth.
