Anais as a Boy, Centro Habana, Cuba 2018

Nothing like looking through a large loupe at my life's memories, including this special image of Anais during my last trip to the island. We have been collaborating since she was barely 8 years old back in 2008, when we met in front of her dance school. Now she wanted to make a series as a boy, and we borrowed some clothes from a dear friend for this occasion. This space was next to my apartment in Centro Habana. So we picked her up early in the morning and headed to this apartment building. She was just perfect, as always.

Anays + The Blue Chair, Guanabacoa, Cuba, 2017

This past week the work has begun on the island, and with the most magnificent Anays Diz Pe. For this image we returned to a small village just outside of the city, and to the home with my favorite chair. While of course her dance images are without compare, she decided to display her sense of fashion and style for this session.

Her talents have now grown to include being a dance professor in two schools, while strolling the catwalk in a most prestigious modeling school. My schedule looks empty in comparison to hers, yet she still finds time for us to collaborate. If she could be photographed every single day she would do so, for she was born to be photographed.

On this morning we were fortunate enough to have sunshine, and plenty of it. We collaborated for perhaps one hour before the sun turned a bit hot for me. Anays could have gone forward for much longer, but perhaps it was best to save our time, and film, for our session this Sunday at the beach.

Anays + El Ministerio del Comercio Exterior, Havana, Cuba, 2016

Here she is again, in another spontaneous performance as we drove around the city to find an appropriate stage. She transforms any location we find into the perfect setting, and is in tune with its significance. 

We were driving around the city and spotted this building. Even though it was drizzling a bit, and there were plenty of people around, Anays and her friend stepped out of the car and performed without hesitation. Her ability to express spontaneously is supreme, and she has my deepest respect for allowing me to be her photographer.

This year she and her mother have moved to the city from the outskirts, and feels that we can make more use of the city in our work. The thought of walking around Havana with Anays in search for locations makes me want to purchase the tickets today!
