Young Student + Staircase, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2020

We visited her school for the first time in 2020, a month before the pandemic swept the world into a sphere of chaos. Innocent times they were, as we walked around the headmaster's house which also doubled as her school. These girls were receiving religious training and the headmaster wanted to do much more than that. We have included his school in our drive to do just that, and support this good man in his endeavor to improve the level of education for her and her friends.

Four friends + Flower, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India

This is what happens when the digital camera comes out. The girls start to run around, pick friends and get creative. We use available light and sit still while the students direct the photography. I’m blessed to have film portraits of all these girls, and some digital images as a reminder of our times together.

Proof of Friends, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

I can’t imagine taking only monochrome film with me to India and am grateful to have taken the chance years ago… the colors of the shawls and faces in Uttar Pradesh. These two girls live in the village which hosts me during my time in that state. From this village we travel in the mornings to various madrasas in order to make portraits of their students. Every once in a while we stay in the village and make portraits of the children in the village. To know that these students live within a few blocks of where my host family lives is a remarkable feeling. Seeing them walking by as we sit at the house in the middle of the day is even more amazing.

Best Friends, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2019

The color portraits by Steve McCurry inspired me to take color film with me to India. These young girls were photographed by me in 2013 when I visited a refugee community in their area. The families were displaced due to the riots of Muzaffarnagar that same year. Now the world is facing a refugee crisis on a massive scale, and a return to chaos for countless girls in Afghanistan. I can only hope otherwise.

Young Girl + Stairs, India, 2020, Limited Edition (50), 11x14 Silver Gelatin Print

This is a silver gelatin print of a young student made by me, the photographer, in my darkroom. It is printed on Ilford MGIVWT glossy fiber 11x14 paper, and toned in selenium for permanence. It is processed in a Zone VI washer to archival standards, and allowed to dry overnight on a screen. The camera/lens combination was a Hasselblad 501CM/100mm, and the frame was exposed onto Kodak's fabulous Tri-X film.

This young girl attends a religious school six days a week, and endures a most conservative society day to day. We have yet to work with this school but hope to support their headmaster with his vision to bring a more rounded curriculum to his school. This school is the second school in one of the villages we support. After hearing about us they sent the invitation for a visit. We of course accepted, since many of these girls know the girls in the second school. We hope to do justice to the needs of these children soon.

The purpose of selling these portraits on Etsy is to support the social work being accomplished through my photography. Presently we have six sewing centers in two states of India, serving both the Hindu and the Muslim communities. In these sewing centers, young women learn a trade while also making clothing for their families. The centers are located in the rural areas, where young women have only one option normally, marriage and a family. At this moment, due to COVID-19, the work is on hold. However, we plan to restart the centers in 2022 and the funds from the sale of these portraits will be applied to the work in India.

As a side note, my belief is that you will be very pleased with the print in person, as the tones of a silver gelatin print are difficult to represent through the screen. One may sense the surface of the print by looking at the gloss in certain areas of the print's surface. In the end, the print you will receive will be slightly different than the one represented on the screen, both in tone and in emotional impact... different in the best sense of the word. Every print is an original, and my hope is that it finds a good space in your home.

Each print will be signed and dated by me, the photographer, and numbered to a maximum of 50 prints (11x14) per negative.

Young Student + Flowers, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2020

Just about now Indian time we would be visiting this girl's school in the district of Shamli. This is the first year since 2012 without a visit to India, and I'm already missing her and her friends. This portrait is from last year, right before the quarantine was put in place by the government. It's a view of a world without the worries that came with the pandemic only a week or so later.

This small village has a school which we wish to support. Last year, as a gesture of goodwill, we had the school plastered and painted. This pleased the children to no end, for how they sat in a building resembling more or so a school. The color behind her is the one picked by the painter, almost perfectly matching the tones of her skin.

Usually after the film photography the girls get to be photographed more spontaneously, because we have more time to do so. They go around and find flowers, change scarves, pose with each other and let their creative thoughts flow. This pot of flowers may have been used by a dozen girls, but each girl makes it her own.

This is an exercise in expression for these girls, because they are rarely allowed to be so free. Sometimes they catch themselves smiling and immediately put their hands over their mouths in response. They learn slowly that their expressions are welcome, and slowly allow themselves to let go.

Soon we hope that the pandemic eases its grip on their part of the world and we can move forward with finding support for her small school. She and her friends deserve nothing less.

Best Friends + Classroom, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2019

Day before yesterday we photographed their school for the first time this year. We visited this school many times over the past few years but this year they have made a more serious effort to include more girls. They are also looking to hire more teachers and improve their level of education.

Our session included an impromptu hour of photography in their classroom and in front of their friends, thus the smiles on their incredible faces.

Over the past three weeks we have visited over 10 villages and reconnected with all madrasas within them thanks to my brother Imdadulla Nadvi and his trust in our collaboration. Tomorrow we set out to visit two more schools and meet more beautiful students of this region.

Best Friends + Chalkboard, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

Earlier this year before COVID-19 ago we photographed their school for the first time this year. We visited this school many times over the past few years but this year they have made a more serious effort to include more girls. They are also looking to hire more teachers and improve their level of education.

During my time in India this year, we have visited over 10 villages and reconnected with all madrasas within them thanks to my brother Imdadulla Nadvi and his trust in our collaboration. Soon we hope to help their school more so, and wish for a better 2021!

Young Girl + Tree, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2019

For those of us interested in supporting my work in India, here is a series of a student in one of the schools. She attends a school in a small village, a new school opened just this year. The headmaster did so because he felt that he could provide a better education than the existing schools in his village.

It is his own land, and he used his own money to build the school. We were so impressed with his sacrifices that, after speaking with the other headmasters, we decided to pay for the school to be finished. Our wonderful friend Tasavvar Gujjarbrought his incredible team to plaster and paint the school.

It's the first building one sees as one approaches the village. The color chosen is a bright green, with a brown border at the bottom. It is absolutely beautiful!

So here she stands in front of the tree in the courtyard. My friends assumed that I wanted her to raise her head and asked her to do so. Immediately I asked them to leave her alone. She remained so calm, and slowly raised her head frame after frame.

She really does love to be photographed, just loves to do so in her own way. When she is in class and I look her way, every single time she smiles, looks down slowly and turns her head to her friends. She is a lovely girl, and for her I present this work.

=====

Young Student + Classroom, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2019

Here is a portrait of the young girl from the previous video. What gives me courage to present this work to all of you is nothing compared to the courage she had to get in front of her classmates. What was most incredible is that she did so without hesitation seemingly, and has my sincerest respect.

What we are looking to do is establish four sewing centers, each supporting about 12 students. The students attend classes for two hours a day, and are supplied with fabric as well for their lessons. At the end of their course each will receive a sewing machine to take home.

A dozen people each putting $50 forward on a monthly basis is needed. Anyone interested in helping with this work may reach out to me directly. For those of us already supporting, this is our project and we are attempting to expand it. Your generosity is very much appreciated!

Students + Friends, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2017

Last night I had a wonderful conversation with a dear friend, and this has given me immense energy going forward. The last two weeks of this year are a great opportunity to make a difference in the world, and to receive a tax deduction as well. Anyone interested in joining us will also be matched 1:1, making that difference that muchmore incredible.

In two months I will be standing in this very spot, as well in adjacent villages and madrasas, in order to gain further understanding of the need and to help implement the educational program desired by the community. The result so far has been very encouraging, and we have begun the implementation. We have gained the support of the community, began the process of putting together at least three sewing centers, and are working towards our first model, village school in the region.

These girls live in the village which will host the model school, and have sensed that something is happening. The energy is palpable, and their excitement has come through their portraits. It has been my honor to bring this proposal to this circle, and I look forward to sharing more news as it develops.

Young Student, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2015

This young girl lives in a small village inside of Uttar Pradesh, India. She attends a religious school for four hours a day. Her parents have little faith in the government school, and such is reflected in its attendance daily. The community however believes in the Madrasa and we will soon establish a wonderful school within her own village. Presently we are supporting a sewing center and we hope to connect the students with the marketplace soon!

Sisters + Shawls, In School, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

Thanks to the hard work of her community leaders in cooperation with Nirvanvan Foundation, these two sisters now attend classes in their own village. Our brothers Imdadullah and Shokeen are working hard to establish the school under the guidance of Nirvana Bodhisattva and his team, and have informed me that the number of girls attending has at least doubled.

Parents are coming forward wondering of their girls can attend school. This happened during my last week in the village. After a function a father of one young girl stopped by to ask about the sewing classes, and also wanted his daughter to attend the school. It was a moment of happiness for us all, for the father of a young girl made the decision after seeing what was happening in his village.

These two sisters helped me move towards making portraits of more than one at a time. Their smiles are contagious, especially when they are together. Their beauty is timeless, and their combined strength is undeniable. They are now attending classes taught by a group of female teachers from their very village. The level of comfort is as clear as day, in contrast to the time when they were only attending religious classes taught solely by men.

It is with a sense of pride that their portrait is being shared, as the film from India is finally being scanned. It has been over four months since this exposure was made, and today is the first time it has been seen thanks to the scanner!

A Moment Between Friends, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

The classroom had just been painted the previous day, and the smell of paint still permeated the warm, morning air. The colors looked absolutely glorious and set the mood for our morning session. Just outside of the classroom sat perhaps forty students learning the Koran, and their voices carried into this beautiful space.

Mukesh and I split the duties, a digital camera in his hands and the film camera in mine. We were fortunate to have two identical rooms, connected by an open doorway. All the girls gathered with Mukesh to make the more spontaneous images, while one girl at a time would come into my room to produce the portraits on film.

This proved to be an incredible combination, for the girls loved to be in front of the digital camera. They loved to be creative, to make photographs with their friends, to express themselves in a different way.

Once my film work ended, it was also time for me to make digital images. It was at that moment when these two young girls walked in front of the camera. Suddenly they broke out into a series of smiles, laughter, movements and pure joy. At least two dozen exposures were made and all the while they allowed me to do so.

This was a rare moment in a most conservative setting. While I have always thought the girls in this community act like girls the world over... perhaps behind the walls of their homes, I have rarely seen such abandon out in the open. These girls knew so, and allowed me to witness their unfiltered joy!

A week or so later it was time to hand these photographs to the girls. The young girl to the right was in the school to receive the photographs, and I asked her to sit next to me while Mukesh was handing photographs to the other students.

Knowing that she would be shy to receive the photographs out in the open, I handed them to her quietly. However, I handed them to her one at a time while smiling ever so slightly. Her reaction was incredible. She did almost shy away, but she remained in place, smiled and took one photograph at a time from my hands while truly looking at each image. She made such an impression on me, one that will remain in my memory for life I do hope.

These are the new colors of the new school, this is the joy in the students as Nirvanavan Foundation proceeds to establish the school thanks to the generous circle of people here on FB. I share this and hope we can continue our support for next year!

Young Student + Window, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2017

This will be the very first negative to be printed in the darkroom this week. For those involved in her school, her portrait is being presented with gratitude. She is one of nearly 150 new students to benefit from the new classes. The first quarter of the budget has been received this week by Nirvanavan Foundation, and plans are under way to move forward with the establishment of the school in her village.

There is something truly magical about this room, and it was discovered almost by accident. One day when we were finished with the portraits in direct sunlight, we decided to go inside and found the light to be absolutely magnificent. The girls loved it of course because they could be photographed in peace, without the prying eyes of the village. They also loved the fact that they were being photographed in subtle light, rather than under the hot sun. So it began, the love affair with window light... and the creativity of the girls just blossomed.

Portraits now included two girls at a time, some near the window, some further away. Some girls looked at the camera, while some girls looked to the window. This young girl specifically was a true natural in front of the lens, and whenever asked stepped right up. Our partners in the village have created a special place for these children, allowing them to collaborate with us and without fear of being scolded. These girls have never been allowed to interact in such a way, and now they had the freedom to do so... and truly lived in the moment.

To see this young girl so poised for her portrait, so confident, pushes me forward even more so. All of those involved have my gratitude for helping make her school possible... and my respect goes to Nirvana and his team for the difficult work ahead.

Students + Me, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2017

It's been two weeks and the memories are still fresh in my mind. This image was made by my brothe Mukesh during our last weekend in Uttar Pradesh, India. We had finished our formal portraits and the girls were having fun with the small camera, expressing themselves alone and with friends. I was walking over to get some film and stopped for a second behind the girls, while Mukesh made this portrait. For those of us involved in these schools, these are two of the students in the new interfaith effort guided by our dear brother Nirvana and Imdadullah.

Young Student, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2017

A few months ago two dozen people from Facebook came together to help fund a new school in Uttar Pradesh, and for this group of people we present her portrait. She is a student in a local madrasa, and her community has expressed a desire to include the government curriculum as well for their children.

With the help of our gracious host we have begun the conversations, and have started to move forward as well with respect to the plan. As of this week her school's new teachers will be visiting Nirvanavan Foundation for initial training, while sewing centers will begin in three villages in a few months.

This was her first portrait session with us, being a new student to the madrasa. Nonetheless she was a true natural and brought her own ideas to the table. In this image she extends her hands and faces the wheat fields adjacent to her school. There is something about making portraits of young girls new to the camera, something magical about their presence. My hope is that her school will turn a page thanks to the generosity of so many of you, and that her future is as bright as the light coming through the window.

3 Friends + Students, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2017

Just two days ago this image was made, thanks to the beautiful students at this madrasa... and of course our hosts Imdadullah Nadvi Nadvi and Munshad Ali Chauhan. The students were playing around with expressions after our formal session, and made groups of two and three in the process.

Some would look at the camera while some would look at me, or my shaved head if the hat was off. The expressions varied greatly, as in this image alone. Every time we informed the girls that now the smaller camera would be used, and that it was time to make group photographs... the gloves were off.

Poor Mukesh Poswal would have his hands full, with almost 30 girls speaking at the same time and asking to be photographed next. This session was recorded with a video camera as well, and is a treasure to behold. The colors are almost as vibrant as the girls, and their love for each other.
