Mentally + Physically Challenged, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

Over 16 years ago it was my privilege to visit this region and photography two homes for mentally and physically challenged individuals.  I was deeply moved by the dedication of the staff and the resilience of the occupants. The young girl in the background of this image was a force of nature herself, as she went back and forth between friends in order to help them with their portraits. She was the first person I met with Down's Syndrome thru my photography and will never be forgotten.

Young Boy in School Uniform, Near Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

Fourteen years ago I was privileged to have access to a beautiful community in western Kenya, thanks to a foundation named MACODEF. We went from village to village, from school to school, in search of incredible people and stories. This school was on the outskirts of Kisumu, and we walked just to the side to make portraits of the entire student body. Some children had shoes and some lacked, while almost all of the children were wearing the only uniform that they possessed. The foundation is doing remarkable work given the conditions, and I applaud their efforts sincerely.

Woman + Field, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

More than a decade and a half ago I was able to visit eastern Kenya in collaboration with an NGO named MACODEF. They were working in this region with the Maragoli Community and were doing so on many levels. It was an honor to witness the various schools with which they were collaborating, two centers for mentally and physically challenged children as well as dealing with the social complications stemming from the HIV/AIDS epidemic. While most of the photography was in monochrome, some of it thankfully included color.

Teacher and Students, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

After we finished with the photography, the teacher gathered his students for a class picture. The school building was just to the left of this space. Visiting this school gave me pause and helped me understand even more so how fortunate we are. I admired this teacher very much and hope that he continues to teach.

Maasai + Boulders, Kenya, 2007, Limited Edition (50), 11x14 Silver Gelatin Print

This is a silver gelatin print of a young Maasai man made by me, the photographer, in my darkroom. It is printed on Ilford MGIVWT glossy fiber 11x14 paper, and toned in selenium for permanence. It is processed in a Zone VI washer to archival standards, and allowed to dry overnight on a screen. This young man and his friends agreed to be photographed in advance of that morning, and met us at the spot agreed upon earlier. They were so kind and generous with their time. They even held my hand as we crossed the street, and really made an impression on me.

The camera/lens combination was a Hasselblad 501CM/180mm, and the frame was exposed onto Fuji's brilliant Neopan Acros 100 using natural light. This portrait is from a library of well over 300,000 negatives exposed over the last 24 years, from four continents and a dozen countries. Every person is spoken with prior to the portrait, and the process is explained fully. Most of my work is on film, and the countries are revisited year after year in order to continue the documentation of the same families, of the same communities.

The purpose of selling these portraits on Etsy is to support the social work being accomplished through my photography. Presently we have six sewing centers in two states of India, serving both the Hindu and the Muslim communities. In these sewing centers, young women learn a trade while also making clothing for their families. The centers are located in the rural areas, where young women have only one option normally, marriage and a family. At this moment, due to COVID-19, the work is on hold. However, we plan to restart the centers in 2022 and the funds from the sale of these portraits will be applied to the work in India.

As a side note, my belief is that you will be very pleased with the print in person, as the tones of a silver gelatin print are difficult to represent through the screen. One may sense the surface of the print by looking at the gloss in certain areas of the print's surface. In the end, the print you will receive will be slightly different than the one represented on the screen, both in tone and in emotional impact... different in the best sense of the word. Every print is an original, and my hope is that it finds a good space in your home.

Each print will be signed and dated by me, the photographer, and numbered to a maximum of 50 prints (11x14) per negative.

Best Friends + Home for Mentally/Physically Challenged, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

Over thirteen years ago her portrait was made during a visit to eastern Kenya. Thanks to the kindness of a foundation called Maragoli Community Development Foundation, we visited many schools as well as homes for children with special needs. On this day we visited a school on the outskirts of the city and photographed its students against the backdrop of a school wall. This was the only dress that they owned, and had put them on as we arrived. Their hardships are unimaginable and this is an improvement over experiences with their own families, with some chained to trees for much of the time. Now they are in great hands with a passionate team.

Note: printed in the darkroom just today onto fiber paper, tones in selenium for permanence.

Massai + Me, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

While making sure all film rolls have been scanned, this frame ran across the screen. It dates back to 2007 and my time with the Masai of eastern Kenya. A dear friend Nga Nga made it all possible, and allowed me to meet an very kind community. I am glad that Nga Nga used my camera to make this image, and look forward to my return to their community one day in the future. After we finished our session in the countryside, this group of men decided to walk back to town rather than take a bus... a walk of around 10 kilometers in the hot sun. What inspirations!

Massai + Sky, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

Last month was spent scanning all of the color film from the past 20 years. For some reason, I scanned the monochrome only, and neglected the color film all these years. This young man belongs to the Masai Community and was photographed during my time in Eastern Kenya. Thanks to my brother Nga Nga this work was possible, and I will forever be in debt to this great man.

Widow + HIV/AIDS, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

This was my first visit to Kenya, and it was a deeply enlightening experience. It was an honor to document the work of a local #ngo, concentrating on the Maragoli community near Kisumu. The foundation worked with orphans, mentally and physically challenged children as well as families ravaged by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The people photographed were some of the most stoic in my experience, and inspired me to do the best possible on their collective behalf.

Boys + Boulders, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

A dozen years ago an organization named MACODEF allowed me to document their work in western Kenya, near the city of Kisumu. They worked with orphaned children from the ongoing HIV/AIDS tragedy, as well as the consequences throughout the society. We walked through villages and sessions were organized in the open fields, houses and schools. We made portraits for an hour or so, then I made this snapshot of the boys hanging around under the tree. It felt like a moment from 100 years before, a surreal experience.

Mentally and Physically Challenged, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

As I get ready for the darkroom tomorrow, I am reminded that countless others have infinitely less. In this series are children who live in a group home outside of Kisumu, Kenya. They have one set of clothes and sleep in a large room with others. Yet they have the most attentive, loving team looking after them... helping them even with their pictures for our session. I'm humbled by their strength in the face of such odds, and will wait patiently until it's time for me to come home.

Best Friends, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

As prints wash in the darkroom tonight, I am reminded that countless others have infinitely less. In this series are children who live in a group home outside of Kisumu, Kenya. They have one set of clothes and sleep in a large room with others. Yet they have the most attentive, loving team looking after them... helping them even with their pictures for our session. I'm humbled by their strength in the face of such odds.

Challenged + School, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007

As I once again get ready to sleep tonight thousands of kilometers away from home, I am reminded that countless others have infinitely less. In this series are children who live in a group home outside of Kisumu, Kenya. They have one set of clothes and sleep in a large room with others. Yet they have the most attentive, loving team looking after them... helping them even with their pictures for our session.

This young boy however did his best to compose himself for his portrait, all under his own power. What it took him to do so one cannot imagine... even 14 years after this series was made. I'm humbled by his strength in the face of such odds, and will wait patiently until it's time for me to go home.

Students in Uniforms, Rural Kenya, 2007

After Lebanon and India, it might be time to go way back to Kenya for the darkroom. The work is very different and will be a challenge in a good way. We'll see.

In this image are students as they waited to be photographed, and watched their friends being photographed. It was an overcast day, so we did what we could to accommodate and photographed all of them in groups. Sometimes two people, sometimes three people showed off their poses to the lens!

Man with Roosters, Rural Kenya, 2007

These are the moments in between planned photography, when a man walks by on his way home with a rooster under his arm. This happened while in rural Kenya, photographing school children and those working for the sake of community development. I hope to return to the continent of Africa soon.
