Boys + Boulders, Kisumu, Kenya, 2007
A dozen years ago an organization named MACODEF allowed me to document their work in western Kenya, near the city of Kisumu. They worked with orphaned children from the ongoing HIV/AIDS tragedy, as well as the consequences throughout the society. We walked through villages and sessions were organized in the open fields, houses and schools. We made portraits for an hour or so, then I made this snapshot of the boys hanging around under the tree. It felt like a moment from 100 years before, a surreal experience.
