De vez en cuando, un fotógrafo se enfrenta a sus iguales creativos, una persona que les ayuda a elevar su arte. Esta ha sido mi experiencia con la magnífica Tamy. Ella me desafía en todos los niveles, y por eso estoy eternamente agradecida.
Hoy fue un día maravilloso en el cuarto oscuro, con los rollos cubanos del 2018. Hace dos años hicimos estas imágenes, pero siento que fuimos a Santa María del Mar apenas ayer. Gracias al Prof. Gysleda, conocí a esta magnífica bailarina. En menos de dos horas, Luis Miguel cambió muchas veces y me ayudó a crear algo especial. Los recuerdos de ese día siempre estarán conmigo, y ahora están en esta foto para que todos los vean también.

In light of the difficulties the young girl face in other parts of the world, an image of a dear friend Cami McCullough is shared. We made this image during the windiest day of my extensive experiences at this magical space. It was so windy that we were unable to hear each other speak, and so just used hand signals most of the time!
This image is being shown to demonstrate the possibilities in the midst of such difficulties. Rather than allowing the wind to get the best of her, Cami used it to her advantage. My hope is that the young girls in rural India, for example, will be able to overcome their more than considerable difficulties. In reality, my wish is that the communities in which they live can provide them with a level playing field, so that they can achieve their fullest potential!
Thank you Cami for sharing your strength with the young girls around the world... it does make a difference!
Ese día estábamos haciendo un video para Iberodance, y de vez en cuando me dieron la oportunidad de usar mi cámara antigua. Mientras la compañía de baile descansaba, le pedí a esta joven bailarina, Katia Cespedes, que caminara hasta el lugar donde la cámara ya estaba esperando. Pasamos un minuto para hacer esta imagen, y ella regresó con sus amigas para tomar un poco de agua fría.
Espero que ella está bien y que la compañía se mantenga segura durante estos tiempos difíciles. ¡Pronto nos reuniremos y haremos más imágenes!

There are those times when an unintended person strolls through the frame. Normally I wait for the person to pass, but sometimes I appear to wait and depress the shutter while looking through the lens. This was one such instance, and nothing fooled this man. Regardless of my attempt to look innocent, the man knew the truth. Oh well, at least he chose to walk into the frame!
On this day we were making a video for Iberodance, and I was given opportunities now and then to use my film camera. While the dance company was resting, I asked this young dancer to walk to the spot where the camera was already waiting. We spent a minute to make this image, and she returned to her friends to have a snack and some cool water.
I hope that she's doing well and that the company is staying safe during these difficult times. Soon we will reunite and make more images!
We connected online and made plans to meet in between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. To have someone willing to do so and in this most remote of spaces is incredible. I am privileged to have met this young woman, and to have had the chance to document her unmatched talents. The fact that she brought her wardrobe along, giving us so many choices, made these images that much more beautiful.

Seven years after we first met at this magical space we reunited for our second session. We had the most beautiful day, perfect sun and very little wind. This time around we failed to bring a thistle brush, but we had our gallon of water for the end of the session.
Collaborating with Kylee is a most positive experience, for she accepts input without hesitation and also brings her own ideas. For this image, we wanted to recreate a popular image from our past and she obliged me perfectly. This time around a wide angle lens was placed on the Hasselblad, accentuating the cracks in the lake bed.
While she requested a dozen images to be scanned, almost 80 were scanned due to my excitement. Tomorrow more will be edited and sent her way. It is my deep honor to document her art, and I look forward to our next time in California!

Hoy tuve una conversación maravillosa con Tamy, y me recordó que normalmente estaría en Cuba en este momento. Desde 2004, he estado en la isla todos los años con la excepción de uno, en 2009. Esta imagen me dice que mi tiempo en la isla fue una bendición y la conversación con Tamy hoy me dice que es mucho más que la fotografía.
Esta imagen se hizo hace dos años, cuando terminamos nuestra fotografía de la mañana frente al museo de arte. Los coches pasaban mientras yo corría hacia la calle para tomar las fotografías, todo el tiempo Tamy mostró su preocupación por mi seguridad. Esto es lo que significa para mí tener una colaboración, que la relación sea igual y mutua.
Hay pocos en la isla con tanto talento, y hay pocos en la isla con su humildad. La humildad hace que sus talentos sean mucho más impresionantes para mí y para todos sus alumnos.
Mis experiencias con Tamy han sido una bendición en mi vida, y espero con ansias nuestra próxima vez juntos en el futuro cercano. Uno debe pensar de manera diferente ahora, y tal vez sea un viaje rápido de diez días un mes, seguido de otro viaje rápido de diez días ... ¡ya veremos!
Cambiando de dirección, aquí hay una imagen de Nathalie frente a la embajada española. Este fue uno de mis lugares favoritos para fotografiar hace dos años, ¡y muchos de ustedes lo saben muy bien!
Por lo general, llegamos a este lugar mucho antes del sol para que podamos estar preparados. Pocas personas estaban allí, pero como muchos lugares oficiales en la ciudad hubo complicaciones. Un guardia de seguridad parecía disfrutar de venir y decirme que éramos menos que bienvenidos.
Un día vi a dos hombres de la embajada parados afuera y decidí obtener permiso de ellos. El único hombre era el jefe de seguridad de la embajada. Escuchó mi explicación, miró a la familia que estaba conmigo y nos dio su permiso con una sonrisa. Nos dijo que éramos bienvenidos cuando quisiéramos, siempre y cuando terminemos a las 8:30. ¡Se sintió como una victoria!
En este día recogimos a Nathalie de su casa, que estaba a unos 15 minutos en coche. Su padre Rubén vino a apoyar, como siempre lo hace. Nathalie estaba lista de inmediato, mucho antes que mi cámara. Utilizamos la hermosa fila de columnas como la escena detrás de ella, y ella pasó de una pose a otra sin problemas.
Hace años, muchas de las muchachas nunca se habrían soltado el pelo, ahora lo hacen con orgullo. Me encanta ver su cabello libre, al igual que son libres de expresarse como desean que el mundo lo vea. Admiro mucho a esta joven y su familia también es especial para mí.
