It was her day once again in the darkroom today, missing our time in the countryside of Cuba. This print reminds me of her beloved family, as well as of the good people of Cuba which have made this work possible. Rather than photograph people without their permission nor input, this portfolio represents the will of the people and their creativity. It is my hope that these images do justice on their collective behalf.

Claudia, Santa Maria del Mar, Cuba, 2014

Hace más de diez años conocí a esta joven por casualidad, mientras visitábamos la casa de su familia para hablar con su prima sobre fotografía. De alguna manera se enteró de que estábamos allí y entró corriendo. Ella no dijo nada, pero sus ojos hablaban perfectamente. Ella aceptó ser incluida y desde entonces nunca ha abandonado mi trabajo.

Ahora ella misma es una artista y crea imágenes similares en contenido a su retrato cercano. Me enorgullece verla crecer como artista y sabía que tendría éxito independientemente de sus opciones profesionales. Ella es un camaleón como modelo, tal como muestran estas dos imágenes. Tiene una presencia genuina frente a la cámara que todo fotógrafo puede apreciar.

¡Esperamos que 2021 sea amable con ella y le traiga mucho éxito!

Cesia y el Museo, La Habana, Cuba, 2018

There's never a dull moment in the streets of Havana, here with Cesia González Pérez in front of El Museo de Bellas Artes. Every time we put a camera down in the city with models around everyone stops and takes the time to look. Even those working, strolling by with their taxis, cannot help themselves and look to their left, to their right. It's a fantastic study into the human mind, in the middle of the day and out in the open.

Liliam + Corner, Guanabacoa, Cuba, 2017

Summer on the island is filled with familiar places, faces and memories. Such is this portrait of wonderful Liliam, one model from the school run by Gysleda Virginia De La Barca Vega. Every week we visit the school and every week we see something different.

That morning we headed out to Guanabacoa very early, along with Noel Castellano. Both of them woke up well before sunrise just to be ready for us, as we picked them up from their homes. Noel was kind enough to meet us on the street so that we could make it out on time.

The sun came up very strong this morning, without a hint of clouds. Thus we worked quickly before it was too much for the models. Liliam was quite brave and did her best regardless, as in this portrait. We tried to find some spaced which allowed for some shade, yet looked for the small spots of sunshine to illuminate her light eyes.

I look forward to this summer and hope that we can collaborate once again. In less than six weeks hopefully we will meet once again at the school, and see the new faces all over again!
