Patricia + Campo, Guanabacoa, Cuba, 2016

Beautiful memory of a great morning in the countryside with Patricia, missing yet another summer in Cuba due to the pandemic. Hope all are healthy and safe on the island!

Thank you @modaegos and team!

Melissa + Racquetball Court, Santa Maria del Mar, Cuba, 2018

Another day in the darkroom reliving my mornings at the racquetball courts of Cuba. This is one of my favorite places in the world for photography, the light is just perfect. Those sunglasses were just right, served her eyes so well under the glaring sun!

Thank you Melissa and ModaEgos for everything!

Claudia + EGOS, Halim Ina, Paseo de Prado, La Habana, Cuba

Even though the photography with Professor Gysleda and her students in the streets is mainly done with the digital camera, the Hasselblad is on a tripod and waiting for the right moment. On this day it was cloudy for most of the afternoon, even raining heavily. At the end of our walk we were on Paseo de Prado when the sun came up, and I set the Hasselblad down immediately. Everyone knew what that meant. We had enough time for maybe a few minutes of sun, so two of the models were photographed... including the wonderful Claudia. The two rolls exposed were enough to make that afternoon worth it film-wise!

Karla Pozo + EGOS, La Habana, Cuba, 2018

Alejandra + El Mar, Santa Maria Del Mar, Cuba, 2018

Sometimes a moment deserves color, as was the case in this instance. Alejandra's skin tones along with the dress color made me load a roll of color film into the Fuji GA645 and join her in the sea. These are the memories which pull on my heart to return, and which one day will be new memories to be made.

Alejandra is a wonderful person, and she accepts anyone as a partner in our collaboration. The sea is one of my favorite places to photograph, and this special camera was purchased specifically for this scenario. She had no hesitation in entering the sea with a formal dress, something I respected even more so as these images were being made.

We waited for calm moments between waves to make the image, and were rewarded with memorable image after memorable image. I have learned through my collaborations with the Cubans that patience is a virtue, and I will do my best until we meet again.

Note: Frame exposed with a Fuji GA645 onto color film stock.

Laura + Gato, La Habana Vieja, Cuba, 2018

Laura + Cat, Old Havana, Cuba, 2018

This past summer my dear friend Gysleda came up with the idea of walking around the city with some of her students from EGOS. We were blessed also with the company of the magnificent Patricia and her superb creativity.

We learned from the previous year, when we were overwhelmed by the number of students. This time around we met later in the afternoon and included less than 10. Everyone took about an hour to get ready, and then we began our work in the streets.

The first half of the session was all digital, and when the light was perfect the analog camera was used. In this frame we found a corner store and asked the men inside if we could use the space. They agreed and in the middle of people walking around we used two rolls to photograph 24 images.

In the middle of Laura's roll, a cat decided to appear. It was magical, and we tried to be as calm as possible. The cat was serene the entire time, looked at Laura sometimes and looked to the street other times. It was perfect!

Two Stars, Havana, Cuba, 2018

This last summer was an exceptional one, thanks to a group of dancers new to my work. As always it began with Gysleda, and continued with Miguel and his friends. Thanks to these two beautiful artists, we have established a sweet collaboration between dance and photography for next summer!

What makes this even more marvelous is that we talked just the evening prior to arrange our plans for the next morning. When it comes to such artists, little is needed... only a space and the hour.

We decided on this space which was less than a block away from my room. It had the most incredible interior, with enough space from the window frames to the first apartment. The windows were actually lacking, and so the light entered without obstruction.

Each dancer was photographed solely, and then they worked togehter to make some fabulous images as well. I am honored to be included in this circle of professionals and look forward to next year when we will create much more!

Anays y Yudel, La Habana, Cuba, 2018

=====

As is tradition my last day in Cuba is my day with Anays. For this summer we included Anyel and the magical fabrics of Yudel. We used this incredible space for our session and arrived just as the sun was rising. The mix of clouds and sun allowed for a variety of lighting conditions.

The only advice provided was to use the light, and nothing else. My preference is to allow each to present their art, their story, without much from me. Once the sun came up and the dresses were in place, we began. The idea that the photographer can concentrate on the photography while the person in front of the lens reveals themselves is a treat unlike any.

Anyone familiar with my work in Cuba will know this young woman, and my deepest admiration for her. She was and continues to be an inspiration to me and my photography.

A Little Color With Anyel, Havana, Cuba, 2018

---------

This same night, Anyel published a memory from years ago, showing me how much she remembered our past. She really loves creating memorable images, and she has incredible talent in front of the lens.

Just before I went to Lebanon, my dear friend David sent me three rolls, three rolls of my time in Cuba last summer. One of the rolls was a color roll from my last day, and it included my time with Anyel and Anays. Here it is for your eyes Anyel, an initial scan only for your review ... enjoy and know that we will create more art next summer. In a few weeks the rest of the film will be ready to share with you!

Anays + A Night in Havana, Cuba, 2017

Here she is, a few minutes before she made our portrait as a team. We drove all over Havana looking for places to photograph, and Alejandrospotted this scene immediately. We turned around and found that it worked perfectly, so we unpacked and had a spontaneous session in the street with Anays.

The bulb was as strong as in any stage light, and happened to be on for that time only. A few minutes after we finished it turned off, and the security person guarding the parking lot closed his shop.

We had a great time and gained much inspiration from the experience. This year much more research will be done in looking for such spaces, and making use of them with such talent!

Model + Car, Havana, Cuba, 2017

Here is yet another image from my time with Gysleda Virginia De La Barca Vega and her wonderful models. We were finished with our afternoon session and walked to this parking lot to end it all on film. The models were gracious enough to allow me 30 minutes, and Gysleda was as usual more than helpful.

We found this old classic and decided to include it rather than the more polished cars nearby. It seemed out of place in this parking lot, which caters to tourists mostly. It however was perfect for us!

Four or so took their places in front of the car, and some took it upon themselves to climb up as well with the owners permission of course. People looked on but that did little to affect the models as they moved from one pose to another. We exposed a few rolls of film and headed back to the school as the sun set.

Anyel + Gysleda + EGOS, Havana, Cuba, Summer of 2017

Last summer was a difficult one in Cuba, but one bright spot was my collaboration with Gysleda and her wonderful school for modeling EGOS. While in the past it has been an incredible source of creativity, this past summer our collaborative efforts went even further.

One such example of such creativity is a young woman named Anyel. She has taken part in EGOS for a few years now, as well as in my photography. Her ability to transform in front of the lens is exceptional, and she presents herself with genuine humility. When asked to be photographed she embraces the opportunity.

On a few occasions last summer Gysleda asked me to photograph a group of models in the streets of Havana. We would meet at the school and then head out into the streets. Walking around with a dozen beautiful spirits was quite the experience, as it was the first time I saw tourists put their phones down and actually look at Cubans.

So we walked around looking for good light, and interesting backgrounds. When we found both we'd stop and all would gather around. Gysleda certainly had the vision regarding presentation and guided each model accordingly. Anyel needed very little guidance and was more than aware of herself in such a public space. She knew to look slightly up to allow the light to gently illuminate her exquisite features, a true delight with whom to work.

Anays Diz Pe + EGOS, La Habana, Cuba, 2018

Model + Sidewalk, EGOS, La Habana, Cuba, 2017

This past summer on the island my collaboration with the magnificent Gysleda Virginia De La Barca was stronger than ever. In addition to the sessions with her models outside of her school EGOS, we walked the streets of the city with a camera in hand and a dozen of her models.

As one can imagine all eyes were on us as we walked around looking for the perfect locations. Of course all eyes were on the models rather than the photographer, but it felt interesting nonetheless. Usually the tourists are looking up at the buildings, with their sunglasses on and their smartphones up in the air. This time around it was as if they were forced to look at the people of Cuba, rather than the buildings and the cars.

For me it has always been the people, for they define the country. With Gysleda it is exactly the same thought, and she embraces all colors and shapes. Rather than adhering to the global norms of beauty, she supports her models and stresses to each one of them the value of their individual beauty. For this and so much more she has my endless admiration and respect.

Alejandra + Local Taxi, Countryside, Cuba, 2017

While Havana is an incredible place for photography, everyone and their mother is walking around with cameras these days... literally. So whenever we had a chance to drive out to the countryside we did so with joy... and our families loved it even more!

On this day we drove out with Alejandra and another model from EGOS, the modeling school run by the incomparable Gysleda Virginia De La Barca Vega. On our way out we realized that it was cloudy, but continued heading into the countryside regardless. We thought at least we'd make digital images for the young women, while having a bit of fun as well.

We found this spot because we arrived early enough to explore. There were two cars, one outside on the grass and one inside the garage. We asked the owners for permission to photograph near their cars, and they both agreed. After we finished with our first locations, we drove back to this garage, as the owner was working on it. He allowed us to photograph while he worked on his car, and a few frames were exposed with him walking around... and those are hopefully on film being processed presently.

Because it was cloudy, we were able to photograph for almost four hours. This meant that all were pretty hungry by the time the work ended. To our surprise the young women and their chaperon allowed us to order pan con lechón for all of us, the iconic Cuban sandwich, from the side of the road... and each ate two, along with locally-made soda!

It was a wonderful morning, and I look forward to next year!

Anyel + Tree, Santa Maria del Mar, Cuba, 2017

Even thought it was cloudy we made the best of it thanks to Anyel's calm spirit. In all of my years documenting her incredible talent in front of the lens, she has always remained positive and kind. She rarely speaks during a session, and when music is playing we will catch her dancing on the video camera.

She has a presence in front of the lens which is to be respected, and is a privilege to photograph. Nothing needs to be said, for she understands expressions and movements. The sunlight rarely bothers her regardless of time of day.

This past year we were blessed to photograph her on three occasions, in her own clothes and in the stylings of Yudel R. Contreras Garcia, the sensational stylist and designer. Her ability to be a chameleon makes her perfect for such a collaboration, when we are provided certain pieces to use for our session. Anyel is able to put the wardrobe on and embrace the feeling such designs emit.

Next year we do hope to drive out to the countryside once again and make photographs along the way, as she truly shines in the open spaces.
