Young Girl + Family Kitchen, Humana People to People, Rajasthan, India

In this village my collaboration with @humanaindia began in 2006, and the photography continues to the present. For this portrait we walked around the village with the teacher and visited the homes of the students. These experiences have enriched my life more than words can express. The girls just loved to role pay, and this young girl stood for her portrait in the family's open kitchen as the light came through the doorway.

Young Student + Madrasa, Uttar Pradesh, India, 201

I really do miss this girl and her friends, and have the highest respect for their courage in the midst of indifference and intolerance. Their village is their world, and more exactly their home is their world. Unless they are attending school, they are almost always within the confines of their homes. School is a refuge for them, a place where they may learn and where they can be themselves among friends.

They’re fully aware of the hardships facing them and yet they persevere and endure through it all. In this classroom they could be themselves and act out their creative thoughts. It’s been an honor to be at their side all of these years.

This village specifically, and this very school, are dear to me. The school itself is very small, has perhaps 24 girls and 20 boys. This is the scenery just behind the school, and all around it as well. The children are so curious and deserve our best in order to help improve their circumstances. We hope to do better in 2022.

Two Students + Two Smiles, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

Yesterday we photographed their school for the first time this year. We visited this school many times over the past few years but this year they have made a more serious effort to include more girls. They are also looking to hire more teachers and improve their level of education.

Our session yesterday included an impromptu hour of photography in their classroom and in front of their friends, thus the smiles on their incredible faces.

Over the past two weeks we have visited over 10 villages and reconnected with all madrasas within them thanks to my brother Imdadulla Nadvi and his trust in our collaboration. Tomorrow we set out to visit two more schools and meet more beautiful students of this region.

800 Pictures, Local Madrasa, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2020

This is what 800 photographs looked like when we handed them to the eager students at a local school, a school which is quite special to us. The students love to be photographed and are beyond kind. To be able to photograph young, muslim girls in a traditional school is quite a privilege. It is my intention to respond to their need to improve their school, and open a new school just for the girls.

Best Friends, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

They attend a wonderful school in a tiny village within Uttar Pradesh, and have my sincerest appreciation for allowing their portraits to be made. We are looking to further support their school and hope that others will join us to make this even more possible.

All interested in supporting this work do reach out to me and we will make it happen!

1 Girl 1 Year = $100

For those interested I will of course provide further, detailed information. This is our way to fulfill that great cliché, making a difference... hoping to turn that cliché into a reality!

Best Friends + Classroom, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2017

A rare glimpse into their world is seen here, as a photograph of the girls is usually impermissible. It is an honor to have permission to do so. The team in their village is working hard to make the school as successful as possible.

Anyone interested in joining us will also be matched 1:1, making that difference more attainable.

Student Art, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

Before classes began last year such public displays of art were rare. Now girls get to sit down with each other, paper on the floor and paint brushes in hand, to create images. Some do so from their day to day experiences, some do so from lands far away.

The energy as this happens is hard to describe, an amazing moment to experience in person. Here is a piece by one of the students in Shokeen's village, one of the most sublime places on earth to be. In this village change is happening, and just today I received a message from one of its residents sharing their pride in the progress being made.

Together we can make the difference so many dream of!

This is a portrait of one sewing center, the wonderful instructor surrounded by her students. They were so proud to be photographed with their teacher!

Thanks to Imdadulla Nadvi for the great work in this region, and especially for bringing a school to this refugee camp!

Best Friends + Madrasa, Shamli District, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

After our photography these days we include a spontaneous session as well, inviting the girls to let loose truly and be with their best friends. In contrast to the single, formal portraits... the variation in these images has been most enlightening. It is a way for these girls to be themselves, to have fun with poses and gestures. They are truly having a blast, and cannot help themselves!

Over and over again they ask for the opportunity to try something different, and when two see what another two have done... they want to do better. It is wonderful to see, the smiles are infectious!

The begin to hold hands, to hug each other, to show their affections without worry. The reactions are marvelous to witness.

The excitement is in the air as this madrasa prepares to include a fuller curriculum, and the students can feel it. These girls share their smiles with us, with those of us especially who have come forward to take part in this effort. On behalf of these girls I share my personal gratitude.

Temple in the Field, Rajasthan, India, 2018

For those of us supporting this work in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, I certainly hope that one day you can visit this beautiful land. From temples in fields to glorious wheat spreading to the horizon, it is a sublime landscape in which the schools are being established.

Most of my work is portraiture, yet every day an attempt is made to include the environment. On this day I decided to take a walk to the village and passed by this familiar site. I had passed it on countless occasions yet never made the time to photograph it.

A couple of young men saw me walking and joined me, a common occurrence when walking around with a camera. They asked me a few questions, then realized my lack of understanding, and after a few minutes decided to be on their way. This image was made as they were asking questions, and they looked into the viewfinder to see what was being photographed before taking off.

Shanu + Fabric, Virat Nagar, Rajasthan, India, 2018

She goes by her nickname and is an inspiration in class. Even though she's unable to speak, she expresses herself perfectly. She loves to be photographed, and freezes when she sees the camera. Usually she focuses immediately on the lens and makes her way to a spot in front of the camera.

I have been photographing in her village for over 12 years now, well before she was born. She has grown up in the school and has always known this strange man coming by to document. Now she is the inspiration behind the posts to locate funding for her school, and the others as well.

On this day we attempted to do some photography of the girls living next to the building in the background, but attracted just too much attention to be effective. So we decided to call it a day and began walking back to the teacher's home.

This is when we noticed the beautiful light and decided to put the camera down right there and then. Shanu of course noticed the camera and put herself together immediately. This is her expression when she notices the camera, total and complete focus!

We photographed her for a few minutes while she maintained this intensity while all others looked on. We then walked down the path a little bit and made some spontaneous photographs of the rest of the crowd.

She is something else!

From the Negative to the Print, The Darkroom, Thanksgiving Eve, 2018

This is what the print looks like as the first paper is being fixed in the darkroom. The frame was exposed in India, then brought back to the world as a silver print thousands of miles away... magical like her beauty!

These were made in the moment with an iPhone, the first of which was the negative in my hand over one of the chemical baths. The second is of the negative being projected onto the paper in the easel, and the third of which is the final print in the fixer.

Sewing Center in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, 2018

Having just returned from this very place, the new sewing center and school in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh. The walls have now been plastered and painted, while the bathroom will be finished over the next two weeks. These young girls were attending the madrasa for religious classes before the foundation, and now they are attending religious classes alongside the formal Uttar Pradesh curriculum. The sewing classes have also begun and the girls are really excited.

Nirvanavan Foundation is working hard to ensure the establishment of both, while we are on our end beginning the process of the fair trade certification and connection to possible parties interested in such a connection. We are hoping to connect these villages to the world marketplace, along with the local.

Any and all those interested in this beautiful project may reach me through the comment section below!

Father, Shower, Humana People to People, Banganga, Rajasthan, November, 2007

This man and his family have treated me since day one as one of their own. On my visits to Humana People to People India they are the first family visited by me and the last. My experiences with them are incomparable, as they continuously seem to outdo themselves with respect to showing their love to me.

Upon arrival I am greeted with the most incredible smiles, from all of the members of this family. They are genuinely excited to work with me without reservation. From providing the perfect background to allowing spontaneous visits, they go out of their way to make it most ideal.

His sister-in-law is responsible for the school sponsored by Humana People to People India, and organizes the girls perfectly. From their wonderful uniforms to the perfectly combed hair, there is a deep sense of pride in the presentation. The girls are usually waiting for us while sitting for class, and have never made my work difficult. Working here is about as peaceful of an experience as my mind can recollect at this very moment.

In the image above he is taking a quick shower after working diligently in the field straight behind him. His house is behind me to my right, and the spot of our first session in this village six years ago is straight ahead perhaps less than twenty meters. He was surprised that I wanted to make this picture and, according to his incredible character, went ahead and paused for a few seconds to allow me to do so. This is the smile that greets me upon arrival, and one can sense his brotherly love through the gentle countenance.

In Banganga, Rajasthan we hope to once again open the doors to the Humana People to People India school in 2013. Most of the girls from my last visit will hopefully be attending classes in the government school system since the nation has enacted legislation overseeing a government school in every single village. Our goal however is to tend to the girls older than the cutoff age, and devoid of education in their lives.

The need is great, and the project is quite urgent. Should you, the reader of this blog, find an interest in joining us more information can be found through my website. You can also contact me directly through my email and find me quite interested in your thoughts.

Kylee, Model, Mother, Sister, El Mirage Lake, Los Angeles, California, September 14, 2012

Having just returned from Los Angeles, my focus now turns to reflection rather than production of images. The next few entries will highlight the beautiful spirits met during my time on the west coast, and documented through my photography.

Needless to say many messages are sent to various women near the Los Angeles area, yet only a small percentage respond. Out of these responses, even less continue the conversation and even fewer make it their intent to realize a collaboration.

The young woman above is named Kylee and our session almost never happens. After exchanging an incredible number of messages and happily so, she learns of a complication in her schedule that makes her unable to collaborate with me. She is palpably sad in her messages to me, and only confirms my thoughts about her, that she is a most genuine person.

As it happens the afternoon of that same day is open and this is shared with her. Pure joy is her reaction and we revise our time to meet about one hour away from the agreed-upon location of our session. From my first email correspondence through the messages exchanged this evening, this most beautiful spirit has shown me nothing but love, kindness and understanding. She loves the people in my portfolio and is kind enough to donate her time to the work. In her understanding of their stories, she confirms her status as a sister to the people in my portfolio.

Rather than complain about the distance, she drives on her own and comes along with me for the final leg of the trip. Rather than demand a stylist and a make-up artist, she offers her wardrobe and goes out of her way to purchase specific pieces for the session. Rather than worry about her hair, she allows me to wet it completely and cover her face with the very mud of the lake bed.

Needless to write, the temperature on the lake bed is difficult to take and even more so when we are working. Instead of complaining while she is performing demanding movements, she smiles and continuously exclaims: 'awesome!'

On our way to El Mirage Lake, we run across a tumbleweed and decide to bring it along with us, and it seems to fit into our session perfectly. The shape of it dances within the spaces between her limbs, and this is done spontaneously.

In her own words written tonight:

'From the moment that I saw your portfolio I knew that you were not just a photographer I wanted to work with, you were a photographer I needed to work with. I felt the passion and love in each and ever one of your photos and I could see your dedication along with your bright and righteous spirit. It shined through all of your images. I could only imagine what we could create together and I knew that working with you would bring something unique to my portfolio, it did way more than that. The images captures are beyond AWESOME and I can not wait until your next trip to L.A.'

The above words are further proof of her selfless nature, and her desire to give rather than to take. I look forward to working with Kylee in the near future and following her with my camera for life.
