¡Sentado en mi casa esta noche y escaneando los rollos del año pasado en Cuba!
Gracias a Tamy por su talento inmenso, y para ayudarme en hacer imágenes sin iguales. Solo con su comprensión sincera podríamos haber hecho imágenes en este campo de béisbol, en esta estructura. Ella es la mejor profesional, pero caminó conmigo en la hierba mojada para que pudiéramos hacer esta imagen.
Pronto verá las docenas de imágenes increíbles que hicimos en esta memorable mañana, y sabrá que las generaciones futuras serán testigos de su espíritu inigualable.

In less than ten days we will see these students in this very classroom once again. Thanks to Imdadullah Nadvi Nadvi and Kari Shokeen classes have been in place for the past year, in addition to a sewing center in the adjacent classroom.
These two are sisters and attend classes together. Their family runs a one-room general store in the village, selling whatever the villagers may need. A few times last year we walked to their store a few minutes from the school and purchased a bottle of soda. Each time we did the younger sister ran out of the house to see us, with the most amazing smile and more energy than one would expect in such a conservative setting!
All interested in helping us with this school would be most appreciated!
Gracias a mi hermano Idiovel y su Plymouth, conocimos a esta niña y su comunidad en las afueras de La Habana. Su familia se mudó más cerca de la ciudad para encontrar trabajo y hacer una vida mejor para ellos mismos.
Vienen del campo y están haciendo lo que pueden para mejorar sus vidas. Muchos en la ciudad resienten estas comunidades y sienten que estas comunidades hacen la vida más difícil para todos. En este sentido, son muy similares a muchas de las personas en mi trabajo, desde los refugiados que viven en el Líbano hasta los refugiados musulmanes en su propio país de la India.
Cuando llegamos a su pequeño grupo de casas nos recibieron con amabilidad. Después de una conversación nos dieron permiso para documentar con fotografía. Los niños, por supuesto, eran los más fáciles, así que comenzamos con ellos.
Esta joven recibió la ayuda de su abuela, que había tomado uno de sus vestidos y se ajustaba a la perfección a su nieta. Ella se sentó junto a la ventana en la casa de sus abuelos mientras hacíamos algunas imágenes. Ella se estaba moviendo mucho con emoción, y me siento muy afortunada de tener esta imagen!

Girl + Chair, Outside of Havana, Cuba, 2018
Thanks to my brother Idiovel and his Plymouth, we met this little girl and her community outside of Havana. Her family moved closer to the city to find work and make a better life for themselves.
They come from the countryside and are doing what they can to improve their lives. Many in the city resent these communities, and they feel that these communities make life harder for everyone. In this respect they are very similar to many of the people in my work, from the refugees living in Lebanon to the Muslim refugees within their own country of India.
When we arrived to their small group of houses they received us with kindness. After some conversation they gave us permission to document with photography. The children of course were the easiest, so we began with them.
This young girl had the help of her grandmother, who had taken one of her dresses and fit it beautifully to her granddaughter. She sat next to the window in her grandparents' home while we made a few images. She was moving so much with excitement, and I feel very fortunate just to have this image!

Esta noche en mi apartamento estoy escaneando los rollos del verano pasado en Cuba. Se ha seleccionado una imagen para compartir esta noche, un recuerdo de una mañana especial, gracias a Jessica y Juan Alberto.
El año pasado fue maravilloso por muchas razones, y especialmente porque me dieron el honor de fotografiar a tres hermosas compañías de danza. De una de esas compañías vienen estos dos bailarines increíblemente talentosos.
Después de ver su actuación una noche, me inspiré para fotografiarlos. Gracias a mi querida amiga Tamy, esta colaboración fue posible. Acordamos una mañana y fuimos a las canchas de racquetball para nuestra sesión.
Su profesionalismo fue impresionante, ya que estaban listos casi de inmediato. Tenían una visión maravillosa, y fue un placer ver su colaboración detrás de la cámara.

This night in my apartment I am scanning the rolls from last summer in Cuba. An image has been selected to share tonight, a memory of a special morning.
Last year was marvelous for many reasons, and especially because I was given the honor of photographing three beautiful dance companies. From one such company come these two incredibly talented dancers.
After watching their performance one evening, I was inspired to photograph them. Thanks to my dear friend Tamy, this collaboration was made possible. We agreed on a morning and drove out to the racquetball courts for our session.
Their professionalism was impressive, as they were ready almost immediately. They had wonderful vision, and it was a pleasure to watch their collaboration from behind the camera.

In three weeks I'll be heading to this very spot to document the good work being accomplished. According to our dear brother Imdadullah Nadvi Nadvi the students are sincerely happy and the school is coming along beautifully. Over 100 girls are attending now, and the sewing centers are thriving.

Estábamos haciendo un video esa tarde, moviéndonos de una plaza a otra. Después de terminar esa parte del video, estábamos a punto de pasar a la siguiente plaza cuando le pregunté al equipo por unos minutos.
Cuatro de los bailarines se quedaron atrás e hicimos una docena de fotografías. Esta es una de las bailarinas y esta es solo una de las fotografías realizadas. Fue una tarde mágica y estoy agradecido a la compañía por esta imagen memorable.

Tonight in my apartment I am scanning the rolls from the past summer in Cuba. One image has been selected to share this evening, a reminder of a special afternoon with Iberodance.
We were making a video on that afternoon, moving from one plaza to another. After we finished that part of the video we were about to move to the next plaza when I asked the team for a few minutes.
Four of the dancers remained behind and we made a dozen photographs. This is one of the dancers and this is just one of the photographs made. It was a magical afternoon and I am thankful to the company for this memorable image.

When the girls find out that we are making pictures with the digital camera, they rush to the classroom. Other than knowing that they will be receiving the photographs, they just love to express themselves!
Here we can see the girls on the left itching to step forward, barely giving us enough space to photograph their two friends. My dear friend Mukesh works more than he has ever in his life justto calm everyone down, and does so with the most beautiful smile!
In less than four weeks this is the room where we will photograph the girls once again, and I look forward to that immensely!

Cuando las muchachas descubren que estamos tomando fotos con la cámara digital, corren al salón de clases. Además de saber que recibirán las fotografías, ¡les encanta expresarse!
Aquí podemos ver a las muchachas de la izquierda que quieren dar un paso adelante, casi sin darnos suficiente espacio para fotografiar a sus dos amigos. Mi querido amigo Mukesh trabaja más que nunca en su vida solo para calmar a todas, ¡y lo hace con la sonrisa más hermosa!
En menos de cuatro semanas, esta es la sala donde fotografiaremos a las muchachas una vez más, ¡y espero que sea inmensa!
In less than four weeks I will be in this classroom which houses the sewing classes for these young girls, and their older sisters. Five years of visits has allowed them to feel more comfortable in front of the camera, allowing us a rare glimpse into their world!
