This past summer on the island my collaboration with the magnificent Gysleda Virginia De La Barca was stronger than ever. In addition to the sessions with her models outside of her school EGOS, we walked the streets of the city with a camera in hand and a dozen of her models.
As one can imagine all eyes were on us as we walked around looking for the perfect locations. Of course all eyes were on the models rather than the photographer, but it felt interesting nonetheless. Usually the tourists are looking up at the buildings, with their sunglasses on and their smartphones up in the air. This time around it was as if they were forced to look at the people of Cuba, rather than the buildings and the cars.
For me it has always been the people, for they define the country. With Gysleda it is exactly the same thought, and she embraces all colors and shapes. Rather than adhering to the global norms of beauty, she supports her models and stresses to each one of them the value of their individual beauty. For this and so much more she has my endless admiration and respect.
