Dunes and Brush, Imperial Sand Dunes, California, 2019

Although I love the portraits, it's time to take a short break and print the landscape images from California and Utah. While working my first corporate gig a few years ago, I had the opportunity to travel the States and bring my camera along. This landscape is from Imperial Sand Dunes in Southern California.

PS This negative was exposed in 2019 with a Hasselblad 501CM/100mm combination and printed in the darkroom to 11x14, toned in selenium for permanence.

Dunes + Sky, Imperial Sand Dunes, California, 2019

How I miss driving thru Southern California, with a camera in my hands. Over every hill was another set of photographic possibilities. While in LA the weekends were reserved for the landscapes of sand dunes!

Bush + Arch, Arches National Park, Moab, Utah, 2016

While my trip to Lebanon had to be cancelled in order for me to be in Utah, it has turned into a fortunate series of visits to the national parks. This image is from my recent trip to Arches National Park, a space that looked like it was designed by the most divine of landscape artists.

Sheer, red cliffs rise from the earth, the most delicate of arches form windows for us to see what is on the other side. The colors are as vibrant as any oil masterpiece, and even more so. The air is clean and fresh, giving me more energy to continue on the trails.

Three days were spent walking around the park, and I was unable to find a single piece of trash anywhere, a single tiny piece of paper. The place left me speechless and I look forward to this weekend's trip to the venerable Zion National Park!

Mariel + El Mirage Dry Lake Bed, California, November 4 of 2015

A few years ago this exquisite woman stepped into my life thanks to her portrait in a fellow photographer's portfolio. One message to her regarding a possible collaboration yielded the kindest response, and confirmed my need to visit the west coast.

Our first session together was at this exact spot, and yielded the greatest number of rolls exposed during one session in my experience to this day. The images we made then impressed me deeply, and made me want to return to document her peerless spirit once again.

Cue forward to this afternoon, and our second session at El Mirage Dry Lake Bed. Nothing needs to be explained to Mariel, for she understands my vision perfectly. Her wardrobe is unmatched, as well as her willingness to go anywhere for the image.

The temperature was well below normal for this time of the year, hovering around 50 degrees without the factor of the intense wind considered. She nonetheless performed flawlessly, changing from one outfit to another effortlessly.

While a full team may usually be present during her modeling sessions, she offers herself without hesitation to my work knowing that such would be missing. She is as selfless as I have ever met, and considers herself fortunate to be photographed alongside the girls from Cuba, India, Lebanon and the rest.

I for one am just as fortunate, and look forward to many more sessions.

Thanks to my dear friend Malachi, I found Mariel and this special place!
