Dancer + Musician, Izmir, Turkey, May 29, 2013

This video features Nurhayat and her rendition of the Britney Spears song, 'Toxic.' It just shows that sometimes one needs to be thousands of miles away from home, a decade or so later, to get a better view of the pop culture back home.

We arrived to Ibrahim's apartment after an early afternoon on campus. It just so happened that his guitar was sitting in front of us, and she picked it up and started practicing while he played on his traditional, stringed instrument as well. Then she surprised us all by volunteering to be recorded. The song above was her first for the afternoon, and she followed with more in English and later in Turkish.

Through photography I am introduced to the most remarkable people. Here is a young woman, a dancer and a student, working with us for a few days as a dancer. Then, almost instantly, she transforms herself and bares her thoughts without reservation musically. While recording her voice my mind kept thinking over and over again: is this really happening?

This feeling is all too common during my travels, and pushes me further into these cultures. The more one digs, the more gems uncovered. She is one such gem, Nurhayat that is.
